Map of the Kai Bae Beach area
From the far southern end of Klong Prao beach it’s a 5 minute walk along the main road to reach the northern section of Kai Bae beach. You are greeted by two large but fading resorts, Cliff Beach and Chang Park plus the Russian Sir Henry Morgan ‘Pirateski’ pub.
But fear not, Kai Bae hasn’t turned into a playground for Eastern Europeans . . . . OK, maybe part of it has. But whilst the northern end of the beach is popular with vodka drinking package tourists, the nicer southern end where you’ll find half a dozen good bungalow resorts on the beach is popular with older independent travellers and young families. And if you want something more upmarket the central area of the beach is now home to three of the islands best resorts – AWA Resort, The Chill and Gajapuri Resort. They all offer something different in terms of architecture and style. However, the beach in this area is a bit of a let down
The nicest stretch of beach is from KB Hut south down to Sea View and Siam Bay Resort. Many of the resorts in this area are run by members of an extended local family. They began as basic huts and the resorts are now gradually going more upmarket with hotel blocks replacing bungalows.
For great views either walk up from the beach to the viewpoint on the hillside above, or ride a scooter up there. It’s one of the postcard views of the island and a great spot to watch the sunset over the small islands that lie just offshore.
Kai Bae is a good alternative for anyone who thinks White Sand Beach is too tacky and touristy and Klong Prao too quiet. You can find enough variety in places to stay, eat and drink that you will have no problem keeping your family happy during your vacation.
