Trat Airport Guide

Bangkok Airways plane at Trat Airport

Information for Bangkok Airways passengers

Trat Airport (TDX) is the nearest airport to the islands of Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak. It’s a pleasant little airport with a maximum of six flights per day arriving and departing.  All arriving flights originate from Suvarnabhumi Airport.  And all departing flights go to Suvarnabhumi.  Therefore, if you are flying to another destination with Bangkok Airways from Trat you will have to change planes in Bangkok.

The reason that it is so quiet is that it is privately owned by Bangkok Airways.  The airline also owns the airports at Sukhothai and Koh Samui.  So, if you have flown to either of these airports, you’ll know what to expect at Trat.

The airport is located on the eastern border of Trat province, 20 minutes drive from the ferry piers to Koh Chang and Koh Mak. 30 minutes from Laem Ngop for speedboats to Koh Mak. And around an hour’s drive to Laem Sok, if you are staying on Koh Kood.

Trat town is 50 minutes drive and is a popular spot for the night for passengers arriving on PG309 or PG307 who can’t get to Koh Mak or Koh Kood the same day.  (The last boat to Koh Kood is at 16:00, and the last to Koh Mak at 16:00.)  Full boat timetables from the mainland in Trat to Koh Kood and Koh Mak can be found on kohkoodferries.coml

It is possible for passengers to to check through baggage, receive boarding passes and complete Customs/Immigration/Quarantine (C.I.Q) at Trat Airport.

However, there are some restrictions.  Please note that the service only applies to passengers who hold a single ticket between their home airport to Trat.  If you have booked Home – Bangkok – Trat separately, then you won’t be able to clear immigration at Trat Airport.

In addition passengers must also be flying on one of Bangkok Airway’s partner airlines. These include major airlines such as Qatar, Emirates, Eva, Finnair, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM and many more. The full list of the 44 partner airlines is here

Internet Access

Free wi-fi internet is available for all passengers.  In addition there are a couple of PCs with LAN connection located in the Departure lounge and Arrival area.  These are free for any passengers to use.

Passenger information

There are two passenger information desks manned by helpful staff.  One is located in the check in area.  The other in the Departure lounge.

First Aid

Trat Airport has a well equipped first aid room, located in a separate building near the Arrivals area. It is open from 0730 to 1900 daily.

ATM and Currency Exchange

There is one ATM at the airport but no currency exchange.

Public Toilets

There are various bathroom facilities inside and outside the terminal building. These include toilets for disabled or elderly passengers and a changing station for infants.

Left Luggage & Lost Property

There isn’t a left luggage office or lost property office at the airport.  But if you have mislaid items, just call the airport and a Ground Services officer will check if it has been handed in.

Shops and restaurants

There is a small coffee shop which offers simple Thai and western meals, snacks and hot and cold drinks. This is located outside the Arrivals area.

Car parking

There is a free car park for private cars directly outside the passenger terminal. It can accommodate 25 cars and 14 motorcycles.  However, there aren’t any overnight or longstay parking facilities.

Car hire

Krungthep Limousine run transfer services from Trat Airport and also provide car hire for visitors who wish to drive themselves.  Note that all vehicles must be returned to the airport.  It’s not possible, for example, to rent a car in Bangkok and drop it off at Trat Airport or vice versa.

There aren’t any brand name car rental companies ( Budget / Hertz / Avis etc) operating at the airport or anywhere in Trat province.

Hotels near Trat Airport

Not many people opt to stay near the airport, as there’s usually no reason to.  Anyone going to Koh Chang can get to the island the same day.  Also, tourists going to Koh Mak or Koh Kood, who arrive too late to catch the last boats, will usually stay in Trat town or closer to the ferry piers.

But if you do want to stay near Trat Airport there’s a nice little resort, ‘Sleep Soundly by the Sea‘ 10 minutes from the airport.  The owners are very helpful and they have a swimming pool.  Modern bungalows are from around 1,000 Baht/night and up.

A bit further away and within easy reach of the ferries for Koh Chang is Lomtalay Resort.  A small, locally owned resort.  Good value aircon bungalows, also around 1,200 Baht/night and a large garden area by the sea with views towards Koh Chang.

Transport Services

Public transport

There aren’t any public bus services operating from Trat Airport. But there are two songtaew (shared pick up truck taxi) services that pick up and drop off at the Airport.  The route that is of most use for passengers on holiday runs between Ao Thammachat pier (ferries to Koh Chang) and the airport.  Note that there is only one taxi running the route, so if that is full you will have to make alternative arrangements.

The songtaew leaves the airport around 15 minutes after the flight has landed or when it is full.  The price is 280 Baht / person to the ferry pier.  It departs from Ao Thammachat pier to the airport around 2 and a half to 3 hours before flight departure time.

The service is popular with locals and expats who are travelling light and don’t have large suitcases etc.  If you’re on holiday, the shared minibus or a private transfer are better, more comfortable options.

Private transfers and shared minibuses

Krungthep Limousine run an efficient shared minibus service between Trat Airport and hotels on Koh Chang.  As well as services from the airport to Laem Ngop, Laem Sok and hotels in Trat town.  For passengers travelling onwards to Koh Chang, the shared minibus is 800 Baht per person.  This drops off at hotels on the west coast of Koh Chang and as far down the east coast as Serenity Resort. The price includes ferry ticket. A return ticket is 1,500 Baht.

For the return trip, from your hotel on Koh Chang to Trat Airport, the minibus will pick you up around 3 and a half to 4 hours before your flight departure time. From Trat airport, you can either use the share minibus or private transfers to your resort on Koh Chang, door to door.

As of mid 2023 there are no longer any shared minibuses to Trat town or Laem Sok pier (for boats to Koh Kood)

Tickets can be bought when you land in Trat.  The ticket counter is located on the left hand side when you exit Baggage Claim.  More information and booking for the shared minibus on the transfers page of this site.

Private transfers can also easily be arranged when you land, although you will save a lot by booking in advance.  For example, for two passengers, figure on 1,900 Baht total.  Including tax, driver, gasoline and ferry tickets for a car and driver to whisk you from the airport to your hotel on Koh Chang. A minibus for a family would be 2,500 Baht total – which is cheaper than paying for 4 tickets for the shared minibus.

Private transfers from Trat Airport to Laem Ngop or Laem Sok are cheaper, as ferry tickets aren’t required.  The private transfer service between the Trat Airport and your hotel on Koh Chang will save you time.  In addition, children’s car seats can also be provided.

Check the transfer page for more information on private transfers, prices and how to book
