There are quite a few good small restaurants in Trat. I’ve gone for Saeng Fa, not only because the food is very good but also because it is is easy to find. Quite a few people end up spending a night in Trat, usually not those heading to Koh Chang but more likely people on their way to the border at Hat Lek or taking a boat to Koh Kood the next day.
The restaurant has two distinctive parts. A stylish, glass fronted, air-conditioned restaurant with excellent coffeeshop and homemade cakes. Plus a more traditional , simpler restaurant which is more for the large Thai tour groups that stop there. Prices are the same in both.
The restaurant has two menus, one English & one Thai. Prices are the same on both, but the Thai menu has a lot more choice. The English only menu sticks to common Thai food. No reason not to order off the Thai menu, it has photos and the owner of the restaurant speaks excellent English, she lived in Australia for a while. She also makes the cakes herself, as good as any you’ll find in Bangkok and way better than any on Koh Chang. Try the Bael fruit cake with macadamia nuts & caramel and also rich chocolate cheesecake.
This was a late lunch, about 3pm, so we tried a few different things ranging from ‘Nam prik’ , spicy dip made with crab meat and crab eggs to some fried fish; to a lemongrass & shredded chicken salad; to stir fried fish with various Thai herbs; to ‘Hoi Jor’ – the crabmeat balls wrapped in the skin from boiled soya milk. All really good.
Ideal place for lunch if you are visiting Trat on a shopping trip from Koh Chang , great for good coffee and cake , and an obvious choice for dinner if you are staying the night in the town centre.
Price: $$ – $$$
These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited. I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies. But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening. In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine. If it does, post a comment below.
