Dinner with a difference on Koh Chang
Not many visitors to Koh Chang realize that it’s possible to have a private dinner cruise without breaking the bank. There are a couple of restaurants on the Klong Prao estuary that have boats for rent for small groups. These restaurants are Iyara Seafood and Klong Prao Seafood. As you might guess, they are mainly seafood restaurants but they both also have a wide range of Thai food. plus some Western and vegetarian options.
These boats are basically motorized pontoons and so are very stable and can cruise slowly along the river and out into the sheltered bay. They can both seat up to 8 passengers. Guests pay the fee for the boat rental and then can order food and drink off the restaurant menu.
The most popular time to rent a boat is for a sunset dinner cruise but they are available for hire throughout the day. The rental period is for 1 and a half hours. During this time the boat will head inland on the Klong Prao river and then double back and, assuming the sea is calm, go out into the bay.
Some groups use the boat to celebrate birthdays or special occasions; others for family dinners; some for selfie / Instagram photo sessions; or for lunch or accompanying paddle boarders from the nearby SUP Station.
The video below if taken from the Koh Chang Seafood boat, but you will see Iyara Seafood’s Floating Cafe in the distance.
Both restaurants charge the same prices for the 90 minute cruise.
For a group of 1-4 people = 1,000 Baht total
For a group of 5-8 people = 1,500 Baht total
This is the total price for the boat hire – not per person. Then you just add the cost of your food and drink. Obviously, it’s better to order food in advance or arrive early at the restaurant, so you don’t have to wait for it to be cooked.
