Burger Station, Kai Bae

Burger Station, Koh Chang. Homemade beef burgers and french fries

The meat cravings usually start after the first few days of eating Thai food.  After a few days of stir fried food, seafood, curries and rice, many people long for something recognisable.  Something with meat and potatoes.

It’s time for an emergency burger. And the ideal spot to get one is at Burger Station.

Burger’s are what they do.  They don’t sell Thai food, pizza or pasta.  Only burgers and french fries.  Burger Station offers a choice of 12 different burgers.  The majority are beef but there’s a rather tasty vegetarian burger and also a succulent chicken breast burger.  Plus you can swap out a beef patty for pork if you so desire.

The restaurant is more of a roadside diner atmosphere.  Just a small open fronted shop unti with a handful of tables and open kitchen where you can see and smell your burger being prepared.  The restaurant is run by a Thai landy named ‘Bew’ who rushes around single handedly taking care of order and cooking.

It’s important to note that these burgers and fries are handmade fresh.  They aren’t pre-packed frozen burgers.  They’re made in the kitchen in front of you, lightly seasoned and cooked just right – medium well. So as to be juicy and succulent, rather than too dry. They aren’t frozen french fries, like you get in most restaurants, either.  In fact, the french fries might look strange if you have been brought up with McDonald’s fries.  That’s because these are real thick cut chips, cut in the shop from whole potatoes. More English or European style than American and fried a deeper brown colour.

Burgers range from the simple ‘Original’ at 119 Baht up to the monster, two patty, Big Mo at 219 Baht.  Somewhere in the middle price-wise are variations with different types of cheese and sauces.  All are filling and come covered in liberal amounts of sauce.  So prepare to get messy. There’s no easy way to eat it without getting your fingers and face a little messed up.

Add on 70 Baht for a generous portion of French fries and another 80 Baht or so for a beer to wash it down with.

Price: $ – $$

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited.  I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies.  But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening.  In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine.  If it does, post a comment below.
