BeachBox @ Koh Chang – Full Review
Overview
BeachBox @ Koh Chang takes the “portacabin by the beach” idea and makes it feel surprisingly stylish. Rather than traditional wooden bungalows, you get compact, container-style rooms arranged around a small central pool in a leafy garden, a couple of minutes’ walk from Klong Kloi Beach at the south of the island.
It’s not a resort in the big-pool, big-restaurant sense. More a small, modern, well-run mini-hotel that works especially well for couples, solo travellers and long-stayers who want somewhere comfortable to sleep, work and cool off, with the sand and beach bars just down the lane.
Location – Back from the Sand, Close to Everything You Need
BeachBox sits just inland from Klong Kloi/Bang Bao Beach:
- Roughly 150 metres from the sand, so an easy walk to the beach
- On the first bend in the access road to Klong Kloi, alongside things like Home Hostel – so handy but not beachfront noisy
- About 3 km from Bang Bao pier, where most of the snorkelling and boat trips depart
- Far down the west coast, so you’ll use taxis or scooters for Kai Bae / Lonely Beach / Klong Prao
The upside of being just off the sand is that you get a quieter, more private garden setting, with jungle behind and the beach still close enough that popping down for a swim or a sunset beer is no effort at all.
Atmosphere
BeachBox has a relaxed, slightly hip feel without trying too hard. The small pool and surrounding garden create a little courtyard atmosphere, with rooms facing onto the water and greenery. It attracts a mix of couples, solo travellers and digital nomad types. People who like comfort and a bit of style, but don’t need a huge resort.
Guests regularly describe it as quiet, chilled and friendly rather than social and noisy. You can easily meet your neighbours by the pool or on the shared terrace, but there’s no obligation to be sociable if you’d rather hide behind a Kindle.
Rooms – Compact but Cleverly Designed
As the name suggests, the rooms at BeachBox are basically mini portacabins turned into neat hotel rooms and they work better than that sounds. According to Booking.com and other OTAs, there’s a mix of fan and AC rooms, plus slightly larger units with terraces and pool views.
Common features include:
- Air-conditioning in most categories; some cheaper fan rooms available
- Private bathroom (shower, toilet, sink but some guests noted hot water issues on occasion)
- Comfortable beds with decent linens
- Wi-Fi, small desk or shelf, simple storage
- Sliding glass doors opening onto a small balcony or directly to the pool area
Strengths
- Guests praise the “wonderful design of the space” – the rooms are small but feel well thought-out, with clean lines and decent finishes
- Very clean – “super clean” comes up often in reviews
- Good sound insulation for a property of this style
Weak Spots
- They are compact; fine for a couple, but not ideal if you travel with several giant suitcases
- A few reviews mention hot water not working for part of their stay, and the odd dusty fan/maintenance niggle
- Views are mainly garden/pool rather than sea – the trade-off for the quiet position
If you go in expecting modern, space-efficient “tiny hotel rooms” rather than spacious villas, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised.
Facilities
For its size, BeachBox is well set up:
- Outdoor Pool: A small but attractive pool in the middle of the property, with sunloungers and a couple of shaded spots – ideal for a quick dip after the beach. Guests specifically praise how well it’s maintained and cleaned daily.
- Garden & Common Area: The whole property is surrounded by greenery, which provides plenty of shade and makes it feel like a little pocket of calm.
- Shared Lounge / Terrace: A simple communal area where people can sit with a laptop, a book or a drink.
- Services: Free Wi-Fi, free parking, tour booking and basic laundry/dry cleaning via partners.
There’s no full restaurant on site, but with Klong Kloi’s beach bars and restaurants just down the road, you won’t go hungry.
The Beach
BeachBox is technically not on the beach, but given it’s around 150 metres away, you’re not exactly suffering. Klong Kloi itself is one of Koh Chang’s more relaxed, family-friendly beaches:
- Soft sand with a gentle slope into the sea
- Generally calm water in high season, great for swimming and floating about
- Lots of small restaurants, bars and massage huts right on the sand
- Longtail boats and snorkelling trips leaving from nearby Bang Bao
YuYu Golden Beach and the other bungalow resorts line the sand, so you’ll be choosing which beachfront place to eat and drink at, then wandering back to your quieter garden room and pool.
How It Compares to Other South-Coast Options
- YuYu Golden Beach: Right on the sand, very sociable restaurant and sunbed scene, but simpler, more basic bungalows and no pool. Better if you want to fall out of bed straight onto the beach and don’t care about room style.
- Tropical Beach Resort: At the far end of Klong Kloi, immediately beachfront with circular bungalows – more “classic Thai bungalow resort” and very quiet, but more dated interiors and still no pool.
- Chivapuri Beach Resort: A big step up in price and quality: Thai-style beachfront villas, a lovely pool and more of a boutique-resort feel. Ideal if you want high comfort and direct sand access.
- Indie Beach: Over on Hat Sai Noi, more boho/Yoga/healthy café vibe with a tiny beachfront cove; attractive if you want a curated retreat-style atmosphere.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Modern, compact rooms that feel cleaner and better designed than many old-school bungalows
- Small pool and shaded garden guests aren’t stuck with “sea or nothing” for a dip
- Quiet location but still very close to Klong Kloi’s sand and restaurants
- Friendly hosts and strong guest reviews for service
- Good price point for what you get
Cons
- Not beachfront; no sea view from most rooms
- Rooms are on the small side
- A handful of reviews mention hot water, clogged showers or dusty fans that needed a clean
- Quite far from the rest of the island if you don’t like scooters or songthaews
Who Should Stay Here?
Perfect for:
- Couples and solo travellers who want a modern, comfortable base near Klong Kloi
- Digital nomads / long-stay guests who prefer a pool and quiet garden to a noisy bar right outside their door
- Travellers who like the idea of “budget boutique”, a small design-y place at sensible prices
Not ideal for:
- Families needing lots of space or separate bedrooms
- Beach purists who insist on walking out of the room straight onto the sand
- Nightlife fans who want easy access to Kai Bae / Lonely Beach every evening
Value for Money
For the combination of pool, modern rooms and quiet-but-convenient location, BeachBox @ Koh Chang represents very good value in the south-coast segment. You pay a bit more than for the most basic Klong Kloi huts, but in return you get cleaner, better-designed rooms and a swimming pool which on hot days matters a lot.
Final Thoughts
BeachBox @ Koh Chang is a smart little choice if you like the atmosphere of Klong Kloi Beach but prefer to sleep somewhere modern, compact and quiet rather than in a slightly tired bamboo hut on the sand. It’s not a resort, and it doesn’t pretend to be. But as a mini-boutique base with a pool a short walk from one of Koh Chang’s most relaxed beaches, it ticks a lot of boxes.
From a business perspective it’s a very practical design. Easy to keep clean and tidy and unlikely to go out of fashion any time soon. And for guests, the price is cheap but they get good value for money and can stay in a far more modern bungalow that they would be able to afford elsewhere on the island.
As with many of the top rated resorts, what sets them apart from other places, and ensures the continuing great reviews, is the owner and the staff. And BeachBox are certainly doing things the right way, with many guests commenting on how friendly and helpful the staff are.
Overall, a definite recommendation for a budget bungalow in the south of Koh Chang. No real downsides other that no sea views and not being beachfront, but for the price, there’s nothing to really complain about.
