Kai Bae Hut Noodle Shop

Kai Bae Hut Restaurant

Dec 2015 – Update.  It’s expanded and looks a bit smarter now than it did when I wrote the review.  But still serves good value Thai food.

Kai Bae Hut Noodle Shop – as the name suggests, started out life as a noodle shop.  Noodles are still sold and by all accounts they are very good.  However, as I’m not really a fan I rarely order them.  This is one of those restaurants that I was umming and ahhhing about including.  Main reason being it isn’t anything exceptional.  But it is consistent and is reasonably priced – I must have eaten there 100 or more times over the years.  I often go for the  ‘Khao Man Gai’ a.k.a. Hainanese Chicken Rice – which isn’t always easy to find on Koh Chang.

It’s a no frills place – an open sided restaurant with some outdoor seating too. I eat here once every couple of weeks if I happen to be passing Kai Bae and am in need of a feed.  Portions aren’t huge so I always order two dishes.  I’ve been through pretty much everything on the , admittedly, small menu  which is limited to the usual Thai dishes that every restaurant sells.  The menu is in Thai / English & Russian.  Prices for most single plate dishes are from 40 – 60 Baht.

More of a lunch place than one to bookmark for a romantic dinner, but it’s much cheaper than eating in one of the restaurants on the nearby beach and probably far better food.

Definitely worth trying if you are staying in the area.  But probably not worth making a real effort to seek out.

Price: $ – $$

Location: 50 metres down the access road for Kai Bae Hut, ( same owners ) in kai Bae.  The access road is at the south end of the beach opposite the southernmost of the two 7-eleven minimarts.

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited. I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies. But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening. In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine. If it does, post a comment below.

  • I went with the beef noodles. It was delicious and only 5 minutes down the road from where we were staying.

The dish was a little small, so when I go back I’ll follow your lead and order two things.

  • Well worth including in my view, we’ve eaten here just about every lunchtime over the past couple of weeks. As you say, hainese chicken rice is great, and I like the “shrimp stew’ fried rice – I know there’s a Thai name for it that I can’t recall, but it reminds me of Indonesian Nasi Campur

Note that I think this place isn’t even open after about 2.30pm, as we always tend to get the last scrapings of their food (or indeed miss out!) when we pitch up at 2pm for lunch.
