Farm Pu Nim, Khlung

Technically, not Koh Chang.  But after enduring three consecutive pretty awful meals over the past week or so in touristy restaurants on White Sand Beach, it was time to go and find some real food.  A place that combined the three important elements of Good Location, Good Food and a Good Price. ( You might feel that Good Service should be added too, but once you start eating out regularly in Thailand you’ll soon realise that there’s no point getting your hopes up on this score, even in the fanciest of places.)

As we were off to Chantaburi, we decided to call into Farm Pu Nim ( Soft shell crab farm) which is located in Khlung, about 15 mins drive from Chantaburi and 45 mins from the mainland pier to Koh Chang.  This restaurant is unique in that you can’t reach it by road or foot.  You get there via a 5 minute boat ride.  The restaurant is built out in the mangroves and is surrounded by shellfish farms , row upon row of plastic bottles can be seen floating on the water during the boat ride to the farm.  These are marking the ropes that oysters are grown on.

The boats run virtually non-stop, so although there is a phone number at the pier to call to get the boat, you probably won’t have to do that.  Just wait a few minutes for the next boat.

The restaurant itself it a bit ramshackle, but is also very large.  It has been there for years and it extremely popular with Thai visitors, but very few Westerners, and no overseas tour groups, go there.  The menu is in Thai only.  But with a bit of pointing and a few basic words it should be easy enough to order some crabs, prawns etc.  Take  alok at some of the wooden furniture that is there, the largest slabs of tree ( massive planks is an understatement )  I’ve seen, the largest tables cost the owners over 100,000 Baht to buy.

The largest prawns you  will have seen are 700 Baht / Kilo.  Big crabs are just 500 Baht / Kilo.  ( These prices are around half what you would pay on Koh Chang for the same thing, if you could find it this fresh.)  A softshell crab is 150 Baht.

Most definitely worth a trip, for both the food and the unique setting & atmosphere, if you have your own transport.

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited. I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies. But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening.
