One Million Somtams, Klong Plu Waterfall

One Million Somtams Klong Plu

The optimistic / ambitiously titled ‘One Million Somtams’ is a good place to go for more traditional Thai food in a riverside setting on the way to the entrance to Klong Plu waterfall.  Definitely not what you’d call salubrious, it’s a very basic place with just  a few tables and chairs on a covered deck overlooking a bend in the river.  You can swim there too if you want.  But given the waste from this and other restaurants will be flowing into the river you may find it better to wait for the beach  – or to  swim in the large pool at the waterfall itself.  But the proximity to the river and breeze along it cool the restaurant nicely.

There’s no English sign outside but the menu is in English & Thai.  Prices are very reasonable and the majority of diners, when I’ve been there, have been either Thai tourists or locals.  Most people go for the somtam ( papaya salad) , there are several types available and the BBQ chicken and pork, but you can get a range of common Thai dishes.  The somtam is some of the best I’ve had on the island.

Good budget choice for anyone used to eating spicy Thai food and wanting a filling lunch after a visit to the waterfall.

February 2013: There is also another beachfront branch adjacent to Panviman Resort on Klong Prao beach.  Prices are a bit higher and food is less spicy.

Price: $ – $$

Location: Roadside, near the southern end of White Sand beach, opposite the entrance to Ban Pu Resort.

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited. I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies. But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening. In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine. If it does, post a comment below.
