At 3pm on 12 June, Baan Chang Thai elephant camp, In Klong Prao, Koh Chang had a new arrival. The elephant calf, weighing in at around 70Kg, was born to ‘Som-O’ a 19 year old elephant. The gestation period for an elephant is around 22 months. So the mother is probably as relieved as the camp owner is at having finally given birth to a healthy calf.
Mother and child are doing well and if you are passing by visitors are welcome to go and see them. There’s no charge to do this but please buy some food for the mother if you want to take photos. Baan Chang Thai is located on the main road in Klong Prao, about 400 metres south of the turning for Klong Plu waterfall.
One big push . . . something all mother’s can relate to ( but on a smaller scale ) . . .
The elephant camp has put up quite a few photos on their Facebook page. Some are below.
And here’s a longer video of Koh Chang’s newest elephant learning to walk just after being born.
