Kai Bae

AWA Resort

AWA Resort Koh Chang

The AWA Resort opened in late 2014 and was an immediate hit.  It’s from the same owner as The Dewa on Klong Prao beach, which is well known for it’s unique architecture.  So it was interesting to see what the AWA Resort would look like.  Turns out they did a good job of making what could have been run of the mill hotel blocks into something special.

The three floor high atrium / reception with huge doors sets the scene and from this guests walk through to the pool which runs the length of the hotel to the beach.   There’s over 120 rooms here, so having enough poolside space was always going to be an issue.  The super-long pool does the job though.

Exterior and pool at AWA Resort, Koh Chang

It’s located adjacent to The Chill and Gajapuri Resort, two other excellent places to stay.  So if you’re planning on booking a 4 star hotel on Kai Bae beach it’s just a matter of deciding which of these three suits you best.  If it comes down to money, then AWA Resort will be the cheapest.  The compromise is that it is the largest and most crowded.

Note that the cheaper Hillside rooms at The AWA are in the inland annexe, rather than on the beach side of the main road.  The upside of these rooms is that they look out onto a large garden area and are in low rise units.  You won’t get the sea views but it is a very nice ambiance.

One obvious downside is the lack of beach.  Sure, at low tide there is a narrow strip of sand.  But that’s not very impressive and the seabed here is rocky and swimming isn’t so easy.  Guests can walk north to the old Chang Park Resort which has a nicer stretch of sand to lie on.

The bottom line is that if you like the Kai Bae area but being by a good sandy beach, and not just the sea, is important for you, you’ll find more suitable alternatives near the southern end of Kai Bae beach. For example, Kai Bae Beach Resort .

Fantastic hotel overall and highly recommend, would easily stay there again and again. 😀 - I would 1000% stay there again just for the bed, it’s the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept on as most beds in Thailand are rock hard or close to it, AWA resorts bed was soft and I got some of the best sleep I’ve had in a long time. Kai Bae is a pretty chilled area, we stayed early May on a long weekend so was mainly Thai’s staying there and no issue with beds being reserved by the pool. We stayed on the beach side so was it was better than the opposite side of the road. 😞 - I don’t think this is something the hotel can fix but when we were there was start of the monsoon and so it was were very humid, because of this the moisture in the room was crazy because the air conditioning was making the humid air condensate was on all surfaces, including our clothes. Leaving stuff out to dry was impossible because of the humidity. The beach wasn’t that great, especially at low tide which exposed the rocks and sludgy sand, it looked better at high tide even if it still wasn’t ideal to swim in. If you have a rental car, the car park is across the road and up a small street and park at the back of the garden side of the hotel, not that a big a deal as you can get staff to drive you in a golf buggy, if you have motorcycle, it’s again across the road but at the front of the garden side of the hotel.

Good value for money 😀 - Spacious and clean room. We loved our balcony with the lovely sea view. The staff were really friendly. Great location with easy access to different restaurants and bars. 😞 - We were missing a gym onsite and a real beach. There were stairs to the sea, but there were many stones and the sand felt muddy.
