Awa Resort Kai Bae

AWA Resort, Kai Bae beach

The AWA Resort opened in late 2014 and was an immediate hit.  It’s from the same owner as The Dewa Resort on Klong Prao beach, which is well known for it’s unique architecture.  So it was interesting to see what the AWA Resort would look like.  Turns out they did a good job of making what could have been run of the mill hotel blocks into something special.

The three floor high atrium / reception with huge doors sets the scene and from this guests walk through to the pool which runs the length of the hotel to the beach.   There’s over 120 rooms here, so having enough poolside space was always going to be an issue.  The super-long pool does the job though.

There were some teething troubles when the resort opened.  But now that systems are in place and the staff are accustomed to the new resort, they seem to be ironed out and it gets consistently good reviews from guests.

It’s located adjacent to The Chill and Gajapuri Resort, two other excellent places to stay.  So if you’re planning on booking a 4 star hotel on Kai Bae beach it’s just a matter of deciding which of these three suits you best.  If it comes down to money then AWA Resort will be the cheapest.  The compromise is that it is the largest and most crowded.

Note that the cheaper Hillside rooms at The AWA are in the inland annexe, rather than on the beach side of the main road.  The upside of these rooms is that they look out onto a large garden area and are in low rise units.  You won’t get the sea views but it isa very nice ambiance.

High Season room rates are from 3,300 Baht per night.

My wife and I stayed at Awa Resort located near the Kai Bae beach in March 2015. We visited the place primarily because we wanted a break from our daily lives and relax and spend quality time with each other at the end of our trip to South East Asia. We stayed at the resort for four days and overall we had a wonderful experience.

We had booked early, not long after it opened, and got a great deal on a Deluxe sea view room and it was beautiful. The hotel is newly built and has a good design that reminded us of old Chinese architecture in places. The design is one of the best I have seen in a while and is exactly how it is shown in the pictures. The high roofed reception was very welcoming and is a stunning ‘first look’ at the resort. Our check in did not take a lot of time and we were accompanied to our room by the bellhop.

Firstly, the bed was very comfortable and the pillows were soft and comfortable. During our stay the weather was very hot in the area but thankfully the air conditioning in our rooms was very good and helped us beat the heat! We also had Wi-Fi access and it was free, however it did not work very well and I could only check my e-mails once throughout my trip so if you really need to use the internet while you are here I would recommend you to think of alternate ways.

We also had our own coffee maker in the room so we did not have to order it from the restaurant. Bottled water was also available which was replaced every day. We had enough space to keep our stuff and there was an electronic safe as well where we could keep all our important possessions.

The television had a satellite connection so there was a range of channels to choose from however there was no DVD player, which isn’t really too important nowadays. The bathrooms were very clean and had a shower stall and a bathtub. We were also provided bathrobes and slippers and everything about the bathroom was perfect – my wife loved the shower gel fragrance. All these facilities made our stay at the hotel memorable!

As far as the management is concerned, we never really met the manager of the place which I find very odd since this has never happened at any place that I have travelled to in the past. However, the staff was very polite and active especially when they were serving us breakfast and when the bellhop accompanied us to our room on the first day.

For me how the staff deals with the customers truly defines how good a place is and Awa Resort met this criterion effectively for me. However, I did notice that there was not enough staff at the pool bar and even though the sheets and towels in our room were changed regularly, some of the new towels smelled dirty or maybe musty. A little strange for a new resort.

My favorite part was the food. The breakfast was commendable. It was a buffet and we could choose from a range of international cuisines. This variety made sure that there was something for everyone on the menu.

There was a very long pool. The staff told me it was around 70 metres and perfect for doing laps. There was also a kid’s pool which is convenient for those coming here with their children. There were a number of sun loungers with umbrellas which were very comfortable and their quantity ensured that even if the hotel was crowded you would still find a place to sit and relax. You can also go to the beach which is right next to the hotel if the pool gets too crowded. However, the beach is quite rocky so wear shoes or sandals if you walk into the sea.

I would recommend that if you stay here you book the room facing towards the sea as the view from there is very beautiful and serene. You can also enjoy the sunset from this room which is why this is highly recommended.

Another thing that you should keep in mind is that the staff is not very helpful as far as getting reservations to restaurants near the hotel is concerned so it is better to get all these things planned and reserved on your own so that you don’t suffer in the end. Also it is better to rent a bike if you would like to explore the areas around the hotel.

The exotic decorations of the hotel add value to your experience and two other areas worth a mention are the beach bar and the spa. The bar has quality cocktails with good offers during happy hour and chill out music in the background which can help you unwind easily. The spa experience is also something that you cannot miss out, so do give it a try.

If you want to relax for a few days or spend quality time with your significant other or your family then this is the perfect place for you. The overall ambiance, polite staff and a range of top-notch facilities would make your stay memorable and worth the money!
