If it’s full moon in November then it’s Loy Krathong in Thailand. This is a water festival where people basically apologise to the river spirits for polluting the waterways of Thailand during the past year and also use the occasion to wish away bad luck that has accumulated during the past year. This is done by floating a gaily decorated ‘Krathong’ on the river or sea. These are usually made from the leaves and stems of banana plants.
There’s also plenty of beer and fireworks and in suburban areas it now has a reputation as the night where teenagers ‘get it on’ for the first time. So, you’ve got Valtentine’s Day + Bonfire Night + no heath & safety regulations. The end result is a fun festival.
If you missed this year’s festival then, on Koh Chang, Klong Prao temple is the place to be to see the local entertainment next year That’s where most of these photos were taken. The decorated pick up trucks were in Trat town – they were due to take part in a parade later in the day.
