Koh Chang Lagoon Resort (Lagoon Princess) – White Sand Beach
Scorecard:
Overall Rating: 7.5 / 10
An older 3-star resort in a superb central beachfront location, with a proper pool and some very well-placed bungalows. Rooms are dated, but the position is hard to beat for the price.
- Location: 9.0 / 10 – Smack in the middle of White Sand Beach, on a great stretch of sand.
- Rooms: 6.8 / 10 – Functional, clean enough, but old-fashioned and dark in places.
- Facilities: 7.4 / 10 – Beachfront pool, restaurant, bar and annex building across the road.
- Beach: 8.6 / 10 – Classic, busy White Sand beachfront; good for swimming and strolling.
- Breakfast / Food: 7.4 / 10 – Standard Thai/Western mix; handy but not a foodie destination.
- Service: 7.6 / 10 – Friendly enough; a few reviews mention variable efficiency when busy.
- Value for Money: 7.6 / 10 – Strong value if you want beachfront in the thick of things and don’t mind dated rooms.
What We Liked
- Prime central beachfront location
- Proper beachfront pool (good for laps, not just splashing)
- A couple of true beachfront bungalows almost on the sand
- Annex rooms across the road with balconies and sunset views
What Could Be Better
- Room décor is old-fashioned and quite dark
- Noise from nearby bars and restaurants in high season
- Not much of a “romantic hideaway” feel
- Service and maintenance are acceptable, not exceptional
Best For
- Guests who want to be on the beach and in the middle of the action
- Mid-budget travellers who value location over room style
- Families who like having a pool and the sea on the doorstep
Summary:
Koh Chang Lagoon is all about location and that beachfront pool. If you can live with dated rooms and a busy setting, it’s a very practical base on White Sand Beach.
Koh Chang Lagoon Princess Resort – Full Review
Overview
Koh Chang Lagoon (often branded as Lagoon Princess) is one of the older resorts in the middle of White Sand Beach. It’s a straightforward 3-star property: nothing fancy, but it delivers a central beachfront location, a proper pool and some good value sea-facing rooms if you book early.
The trade-off is that the rooms are dated, and you’re very much in the thick of White Sand’s busiest area. If that’s what you want, great. If you’re hoping for peace, romance or modern design, look elsewhere.
Location – Right in the Middle of White Sand
This is one of Lagoon’s main selling points:
- Directly on the central stretch of White Sand Beach
- Two minutes from bars, restaurants, minimarts and street food
- Songthaews running past on the main road for easy island transport
It’s unbeatable if you want to be right in the action. It’s terrible if you want to escape the action. Simple as that.
Atmosphere
Lagoon feels like a classic, slightly old-fashioned Thai beach hotel. Low-rise buildings, a line of bungalows close to the sand, a beachfront pool and a restaurant facing the sea.
The vibe is relaxed during the day, busier in the evenings as people wander between the hotel, beach and nearby bars. It’s not a party hotel, but you’ll definitely know you’re on the main tourist beach in high season.
Rooms – Older Thai-Style 3-Star
Rooms at Lagoon were clearly built for a different era of Thai tourism — when the ideal was: “keep it dark, keep the AC cold and don’t worry about mood lighting.”
- Décor: tiled floors, heavy curtains, dark wood furniture
- Facilities: AC, TV, minibar, kettle, private bathroom
- Cleanliness: generally fine, if unspectacular
There are three main “zones”:
- Beachfront bungalows: A couple of prized units that are literally a few steps from the sand. These are the rooms to book if you’re organised and don’t mind older interiors.
- Beachside rooms: In the main blocks behind the pool. Short walk to everything, some with partial sea views.
- Annex rooms across the road: Cheaper, brighter and set in a separate building up the slope. They’re not on the beach, but often feel lighter and more modern, with balconies facing the sunset.
It’s worth paying close attention to room type when you book, as experiences differ a lot depending on where you end up.
Facilities
Beachfront Pool
One of the best things about Lagoon is the pool: a proper rectangular pool right by the beach, big enough to actually swim lengths. A rare treat in a world of curvy freeform pools.
Restaurant & Bar
The beachfront restaurant serves Thai, international and seafood dishes. Quality is acceptable rather than outstanding, but the beach view and convenience are the main draws. There’s also a coffee shop/bar area for drinks and snacks.
Other Facilities
- Sunbeds on the sand and around the pool
- Tour desk and basic activities booking
- Simple fitness room at some points in its marketing; in practice, don’t expect a full gym
The Beach
Lagoon fronts one of the nicest central stretches of White Sand Beach:
- Soft sand, wide enough for walks and sunbathing
- Good swimming during high season
- Plenty of beach bars and restaurants within a short stroll
You’re sharing it with the crowds, but if your idea of a beach holiday includes people-watching and easy access to cold beer, that’s a plus.
How It Compares to Other White Sand Resorts
- KC Grande: Newer, larger and more polished up at the north end, with multiple pools and better rooms but significantly pricier.
- Kacha Resort: Similar age and target market, with more facilities and more room types. Lagoon’s beachfront pool layout is arguably better for actual swimming.
- Banpu Resort: Another older beachfront resort slightly further south. Banpu’s gardens are nicer; Lagoon has a better pool and more central location.
- 15 Palms: Smaller, more stylish and quieter at the northern end. Better for couples who care about room quality and atmosphere.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Prime central beachfront location on White Sand
- Good-sized beachfront pool you can actually swim in
- Beachfront bungalows that are almost on the sand
- Cheaper annex rooms with balconies and sunset views
Cons
- Rooms are dated and a bit gloomy by modern standards
- Can be noisy in high season from bars and beach activity
- Service and maintenance are fine, but nothing special
- Definitely not a “luxury” or “romantic hideaway” resort
Who Should Stay Here?
Perfect for:
- Travellers who want to be on the sand and in the centre of things
- Families who like having a pool and a busy beach on the doorstep
- Mid-budget guests happy with clean, older rooms in exchange for location
Not ideal for:
- Couples looking for peace, privacy or modern boutique style
- Light sleepers in peak season
- Anyone expecting slick 4-star rooms and service
Value for Money
If you want a central beachfront location with a proper pool and don’t mind that the rooms feel like 3-star Thailand circa 2005, Lagoon can offer very good value. If you’re the type to obsess over room décor, you’ll be happier paying more at KC Grande or 15 Palms.
Final Thoughts
Koh Chang Lagoon does exactly what a lot of people need: clean-ish rooms, a big pool, a great bit of beach and easy access to everything on White Sand. It’s not pretty in the boutique sense, but it is practical.
If you’re coming to Koh Chang for a classic, central beach holiday and don’t plan to spend your evenings admiring the decor , it is well worth a look.
