Thai Garden Hill Resort – Chai Chet
Scorecard:
Overall Rating: 8.0 / 10
Low-key, good-value resort a short walk back from the north end of Klong Prao Beach (Chai Chet), with a big free-form pool, simple bungalows and lots of greenery. Not on the sand, but a strong budget/mid-range option if you’re happy with a 5-10 minute walk to the beach.
- Location: 8.0 / 10 – Set just inland from northern Klong Prao / Chai Chet, about 300m from the beach depending on route, and a few minutes’ walk from Mu Ko Chang National Park boundary and local shops. Quiet, with hills behind and easy access to the main road.
- Rooms: 7.8 / 10 – Around 45 rooms and bungalows with balconies, cable TV, fridge and A/C. Interiors are basic but comfortable; some units are more modern, others feel dated.
- Facilities: 8.1 / 10 – Large free-form outdoor pool, kids’ section, restaurant, basic spa/massage, tour desk and free parking. Not a full resort complex, but more than many similarly priced places offer.
- Beach / Sea Access: 7.6 / 10 – No beachfront; Klong Prao / Chai Chet beach is reachable in roughly 10 minutes on foot or a couple of minutes by scooter. Once there, you get a wide, sandy bay shared with several seafront resorts.
- Breakfast / Food: 7.8 / 10 – On-site restaurant serves Thai and international dishes; breakfast is usually a simple buffet or cooked set, generally regarded as “good enough” rather than memorable.
- Service: 8.2 / 10 – Reviews highlight friendly staff and a family-style atmosphere; English is spoken sufficiently for most needs and the tour desk can arrange transfers and trips.
- Value for Money: 8.8 / 10 – Frequently praised as “good value” and “great price for what you get”, especially when compared with 2 star beachfront places that cost more but have fewer facilities.

What Could Be Better
- Not on the beach, you have to walk or ride a scooter to the sand
- Interiors and bathrooms in some rooms feel worn and dated
- Limited on-site food and drink compared to bigger resorts
- Occasional comments about patchy Wi-Fi in some rooms
Best For
- Budget-conscious couples and families who still want a nice pool
- Long-stayers and repeat visitors who know Klong Prao and don’t need beachfront

Thai Garden Hill Resort – Full Review
Overview
Thai Garden Hill sits a few minutes’ walk back from the north end of Klong Prao Beach, in the Chai Chet area. Instead of being shoulder-to-shoulder with beachfront resorts, it’s tucked slightly inland, with a backdrop of jungle-covered hills and its main feature which is a large, free-form pool at the centre of the property.
This is very much a “good value Thai resort” rather than a styled boutique: white-walled villa blocks with steep red roofs, tiled floors, simple balconies and a palm-ringed pool. If you want somewhere affordable, quiet and green, and you’re happy walking or riding to the beach, it’s worth a look.
Location – Inland from Northern Klong Prao / Chai Chet
The resort’s location is slightly out of the way:
- Roughly 300m from Klong Prao Beach
- On the main road, with 7-Elevens, small restaurants and motorbike rental outlets within easy reach; yet the property itself feels fairly secluded once you’re inside.
You don’t get “sea outside your window”, but you do get a bit more peace, plus the option of quickly heading north to White Sand or south to central Klong Prao and Kai Bae.
Atmosphere
The overall vibe is low-key and slightly old-school:
- Mix of European and Thai families, couples and long-stay guests.
- Most socialising happens around the pool and open-sided restaurant rather than in bars.
- Nights are generally quiet , you can wander down towards the beach or main road for a drink, but there’s no built-in nightlife here.
Trip-aggregator reviews tend to highlight “peaceful”, “relaxing” and “nice pool” as recurring themes along with “good value” and “fine if you rent a scooter”.
Rooms & Layout
The resort has around 45 rooms in a mixture of two-storey villa blocks and bungalow-style units facing the pool and gardens. Interiors are straightforward and vary a bit depending on when a particular building was last refreshed.
Typical Room Types
- Standard / Superior Rooms: Hotel-style rooms with either double or twin beds, balcony/terrace and a pool or garden view. These form the bulk of the inventory.
- Pool-View / Pool-Access Units: Some rooms are clustered closer to the pool with better views or easier access , which is handy if you have kids who live in the water.
- Family Rooms: Larger rooms or units with extra beds; OTAs mention configurations suitable for up to three or four people with existing bedding and an extra bed.
Standard amenities include:
- Air-conditioning
- Private bathroom with hot shower
- LCD TV with cable channels
- Fridge / minibar and bottled water
- Balcony or terrace with simple seating
- Free in-room Wi-Fi (works, but not always fast , remember it’s an island 3 star hotel, not a co-working hub)
Guest feedback paints a picture of rooms that are “clean and comfortable but basic”. Some bathrooms could use a cosmetic refresh and décor in certain blocks looks very early-2000s Thai resort, but that’s reflected in the price.
Pool & Outdoor Areas
If Thai Garden Hill has a selling point, it’s the pool. This is:
- A large, free-form pool in the middle of the resort, with a shallow, rounded children’s section and curved main swimming area.
- Plenty of decking and sunloungers around the edge, plus palms and small garden beds giving it a “tropical pond” feel.
- Views up to the forested hillside behind the resort, which makes it feel more jungly than coastal.
For a relatively budget-friendly property, it’s an impressive amount of pool. If you like to actually swim lengths or have kids who want to splash for hours, it’s a step up from the plunge pools you find at many similarly priced bungalows.
Food & Breakfast
On the food side, expectations should be set at “simple and serviceable”:
- Breakfast: Usually a small buffet with toast, eggs, fruit and Thai dishes, or set breakfast plates when occupancy is low. Reviews on Booking.com and Thai-language sites generally say it’s “OK” or “good” rather than rave about it. Which feels about right for the price point.
- Restaurant: The on-site restaurant serves Thai food and some simple Western options for lunch and dinner; there’s also outdoor seating near the pool. For more variety or cheaper street-level food, you’ll head down towards Chai Chet or Klong Prao village.
Beach & Access to the Sea
It’s worth stressing clearly: Thai Garden Hill is not a beachfront resort. But:
- The north end of Klong Prao / Chai Chet beach is walkable in under 10 minutes for most people
- Once at the beach you can use the public stretches between resorts or buy food/drinks from seafront places like Coconut and Flora, which effectively “rent” you a sunbed.
- With a scooter, the beach run is a 2 minute trip, and you can also hop north to White Sand Beach or south to central Klong Prao with minimal effort.
So you trade being able to hear the waves from your bed for a cheaper room, a bigger pool and more greenery , a deal many repeat visitors are happy to make.
Facilities & Services
Beyond the pool and restaurant, you get the basics:
- Massage / Spa: Simple Thai massage and basic treatments are available on-site or can be arranged via reception.
- Tour Desk: Staff can arrange snorkelling trips, elephant camp visits, waterfalls, kayaking and transport to/from the piers.
- Car & Bike Hire: Like most Koh Chang resorts, Thai Garden Hill can set up scooter or car rental via local companies.
- Parking: Free on-site parking, useful if you’re self-driving around the island.
How Thai Garden Hill Compares to Other Klong Prao Options
- Versus Coconut Beach Resort (and other beachfront 3 stars): Coconut puts you directly on the sand with similar-level rooms, but costs more on average. Thai Garden Hill trades beachfront for a bigger, quieter pool and lower rates.
- Versus Thai garden-style bungalows with small pools: Many budget bungalows around Klong Prao have tiny pools or none at all; Thai Garden Hill’s pool and grounds are a step up if “time in the water” is a priority.
- Versus mid-range resorts like VAYNA or Barali: Those are beachfront and more stylish, but considerably pricier; Thai Garden Hill is more of a “good base” than a “destination resort”.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Large, pleasant pool with jungle backdrop
- Quiet, green setting away from road noise
- Short walk or quick ride to Klong Prao / Chai Chet beach
- Good value for money, especially for longer stays
- Friendly staff and low-key, relaxed atmosphere
Cons
- Not on the beach, you’ll have to walk/ride for sand and sea
- Rooms and bathrooms are basic and some are dated
- Wi-Fi and hot water can be temperamental in a few units
- Limited on-site dining and no real nightlife
Who Should Stay at Thai Garden Hill?
Great choice for:
- Budget-minded travellers who still care about having a proper pool
- Families comfortable with a short walk/ride to the beach
- Repeat Koh Chang visitors who know the area and want a quiet base
- Long-stay guests and digital nomads who value price and greenery over design
Probably not ideal for:
- First-timers who insist on beachfront rooms and sea views
- Design-obsessed travellers who dislike older Thai resort styling
- Nightlife hunters who want bars and live music on the doorstep
Value for Money
For what you pay, Thai Garden Hill compares well: large pool, decent-sized rooms, quiet location and easy access to both the beach and main road. Independent reviews and your own site’s write-up describe it as a “good option for those on a budget or looking for more value than many 2-star beachfront resorts” which sums it up nicely.
Final Thoughts
Thai Garden Hill Resort isn’t trying to compete with the big beachfront names. Instead, it fills a useful niche: a quiet, green, moderately priced place where you can spend days by a large pool, nip to the beach when you fancy a swim in the sea, and not worry too much about the bill. If that’s your style of Koh Chang holiday, it’s a solid contender.
The location isn’t the most scenic, with beer bars, a gas station and builders merchant being the neighbours. But the north end of Klong Prao beach with plenty of shops, a supermarket and 7-eleven etc is just 5 minutes walk away.
The rooms are in two storey bungalows, one room on each floor. These are clustered around the freeform pool. andwhen you’re lazing by the pool and looking inland towards the hills, then it’s actually nice little hideaway.
The reception and parking area is roadside and so the resort is very private. You won’t really notice traffic noise. As it’s a budget resort the rooms are a little dated and in need of some renovation but you get what you pay for. Guests who are disappointed tend to expect too much from a roadside two star place.
If you don’t mind a few minutes walk to the beach and just need an aircon room and pool, then there’s no reason not to consider staying at Thai Garden Hill Resort.
And for anyone interested in staying longterm the rooms can be rented on a monthly basis, for very reasonable rates, through the resort direct.
