So, we’ve gone and got ourselves a holiday home / rental villa on Koh Chang and what’s more it’s only 200 metres from ‘Baan Rim Nam’, our guesthouse.
Baan Moon Fisherman’s Villa was originally a fisherman’s house built on wood stilts located right on the lagoon at the mouth of the Klong Prao beach. It was built around 12 years ago. although it looked very different back then. It was a basic hut owned by a local fishing family. The house was bought by an Englishman and his wife who rebuilt it and made it into a nice little riverside home.
Several years later it was sold to a French couple who live on the island who renovated the house further and added a second floor. From mid 2013 onwards it has been used as a holiday rental property.
Fast forward to December 2014. Another change of hands and the end result is that we are now looking after the house and handling the rentals.
Why stay at Baan Moon Fisherman’s Villa?
Good question. There are an increasing number of holiday homes on Koh Chang however the vast majority are modern concrete houses on a couple of developments in the north and on the east coast of the island. These are fine if you like double glazed windows and being on an estate with a lot of other people renting very similar homes.
But they aren’t very Thai. They aren’t unique to Koh Chang. They aren’t much different to your house back home – except that there’s no indoor heating only air-conditioners. And location-wise, they aren’t a stone’s throw from any of the main beaches on the island.
That’s what makes Baan Moon unique.
It’s a fully-fledged wooden villa which still retains the unique charm of traditional Thai houses while offering the comfort and convenience of a modern home. Add to this, the history of the house and the community it’s located on in the river and you’ve got the perfect choice for an island hideaway. And there’s no other holiday home on the island where you can watch small fishing boats, old wooden gondolas from the restaurants and tourists on their kayaks go past a few metres away, whilst you are enjoying an alfresco meal in the shade or sunbathing on the outer deck.
When we moved here in 2003, the inhabitants on the river were still mainly fishermen. Over the years the old houses have been expanded, there are still a couple of families who have fishing boats outside their homes, but nowadays the river estuary is a good mix of popular seafood restaurants; a couple of small guesthouses; a great little massage shop & spa and private homes. Within a few minutes drive or scooter ride you have all the shops and amenities you need e.g. laundry, supermarket, 7-eleven, bakery, pharmacy, fruit shops etc
The 120Sqm villa itself is fully equipped and boasts a large open living space and kitchen, two large air-conditioned bedrooms, two bathrooms and is suitable for 1 to 6 guests. The 180 degrees panoramic terrace offers unparalleled views onto the jungle-covered mountains, the mangroves, a large coconut grove and the beach & sea (and, of course, daily sunsets).
The holiday villa is ideal for: Singles, Couples, Families. The location at the mouth of the estuary makes it perfect for anyone looking for peace and quiet. Maybe you love the sea; you’re a fisherman; a Yogi; a dreamer or a peace-seeker.
BUT, Due to the location of the house on a quiet lagoon and the nature of the house, a wooden house on the water, we are unable to accept groups of people who come to party. The house is also strictly non-smoking.
