Chai Chet Resort

Chai Chet Resort – Northern Klong Prao

Scorecard:

Overall Rating: 8.2 / 10
A large, long-established resort wrapped around the rocky Chai Chet headland at the northern end of Klong Prao. Big seafront pool, various villa types and great views over the bay. Parts of the resort feel dated and it’s not on the main stretch of Klong Prao’s soft sand, but the setting is unique and the prices are reasonable for the amount of water and space you get.

  • Location: 8.9 / 10 – Dramatic headland setting with water on multiple sides and views down Klong Prao Beach. The wide sandy part of the beach is a 2–3 minute walk from reception.
  • Rooms: 7.9 / 10 – Wide range of hillsides, garden and seaview rooms and villas. Interiors are clean but older in style; some newer seaview units are more modern.
  • Facilities: 8.6 / 10 – Large lagoon-style pool overlooking the sea, children’s pool, pool bar, “Rabiang Chai Chet” restaurant, meeting room, wedding set-ups and pier.
  • Beach / Sea Access: 8.5 / 10 – Direct shoreline and small sandy coves on the headland; main Klong Prao beach is a short walk away. Great sea views but not classic “step out onto a long sandy beach” beachfront.
  • Breakfast / Food: 8.1 / 10 – Buffet breakfast plus Thai/seafood at the seafront restaurant; generally well-reviewed if not spectacular.
  • Service: 8.0 / 10 – Friendly staff and management; reviews mention both warmth and the fact that some service aspects feel a bit “old school”.
  • Value for Money: 8.4 / 10 – Good value for such a large seafront property with big pools and views; the trade-off is dated rooms and patchy maintenance in places.

What We Liked

  • Superb headland position with panoramic views over Klong Prao and the sea
  • Huge seafront pool and children’s pool with sunset views
  • Mix of hillside, garden and seafront villas, lots of choice for different budgets
  • Relative sense of space; the grounds are extensive with plenty of greenery
  • Easy access to Chai Chet shops, minimarts and restaurants

What Could Be Better

  • Rooms and some buildings are clearly ageing and would benefit from a full modern refurb
  • Not on the best part of Klong Prao’s soft sand
  • Some guest feedback mentions variable housekeeping and small maintenance issues
  • Layout is quite spread out and hilly in places; not ideal for anyone with mobility issues

Best For

  • Families and couples who want a big pool and great views more than cutting-edge interiors
  • Travellers who like resort-style facilities and don’t mind walking a bit to the main beach
  • Guests looking for a “good value but not fancy” west-coast base with easy access to shops

Summary:
Chai Chet Resort is all about location and water: a big, old-school resort wrapped around a headland with a large seafront pool, views across Klong Prao Bay and direct access to the sea. The rooms are dated rather than designer, and it isn’t on the textbook stretch of Klong Prao sand. But for many holidaymakers the space, views and price point make up for that.

Chai Chet Resort – Full Review

Overview

If you’ve ever looked across Klong Prao Bay and noticed a cluster of buildings, pools and coconut trees sitting out on the northern headland, that’s Chai Chet Resort. It’s been there for years and has expanded over time into a sprawling 3 star complex of hillside rooms, seafront villas, a big curved pool and a pier poking out into the bay.

Online, reviews tend to follow a pattern: people love the setting and pool, like the views and breakfast, and then gently (or not so gently) complain that the rooms and some facilities really need a refresh.  So this is not a shiny new boutique resort. But it is a scenic, good-value place to spend a week if you’re realistic about what you’re getting.

Location – On the Chai Chet Headland

Chai Chet Resort occupies much of the Chai Chet headland, effectively forming the northern “bookend” to Klong Prao Beach:

  • Water on multiple sides, with sea, river mouth and bay all visible from different parts of the property.
  • The main sandy sweep of Klong Prao Beach is a short walk from reception, roughly 2 minutes away.
  • Chai Chet’s small plazas with supermarkets, ATMs, minimarts, cafés and tour desks are just outside the entrance on the main road.
  • White Sand Beach is about 10 minutes by songthaew to the north; Klong Prao village and Kai Bae to the south are similar distances south.

It’s one of the most convenient locations on the island, especially if you want both a beach and easy access to shops and restaurants.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is classic Thai mid-range resort:

  • Families and couples around the big pool and kids’ pool
  • Thai holidaymakers and tour groups using the meeting room and wedding facilities in peak months
  • Plenty of deckchairs and people watching the sunset over the bay

It’s more of a “family beach hotel” mood than a romantic boutique hideaway or party resort. Evenings are generally low-key. A drink by the pool or at the restaurant, dinner either on site or in Chai Chet, then bed.

Rooms – Lots of Choice, Dated Décor

Because the resort has grown over time, there’s quite a wide range of room types and buildings. The official site lists everything from hillside standards to grand villas:

  • Hillside / Garden Rooms: Standard and hillside categories set back from the sea, often with garden or partial sea views from higher floors.
  • Standard / Deluxe Seaview: Rooms closer to the water with balconies looking across the bay which are the more popular categories in recent reviews.
  • Beach / Garden Villas: Single-storey units closer to the pools and frontage, some virtually on the water’s edge.

Across the board you can expect:

  • Air-conditioning and private bathrooms
  • Balcony or terrace with basic outdoor seating
  • Mini-fridge, TV and safe
  • Simple tiled floors and wooden furniture

Guest feedback is consistent: “big, comfortable enough, but a bit old and needs updating”.  If you care most about interior design, this probably isn’t for you. If you mainly want a decent bed, A/C and somewhere to shower before going back outside to the pool, beach or restaurants, you’ll be fine.

Facilities

Chai Chet’s facilities are where it still feels competitive:

  • Seafront Infinity-Style Pool: Large, curved pool right by the water with submerged seats, built-in features and sunset views; there’s also a children’s pool.
  • “Rabiang Chai Chet” Restaurant: The main seafront restaurant serving Thai dishes, seafood and some Western options; popular for its views even among non-guests.
  • Meeting Room & Wedding Packages: On-site function room and headland/waterfront spaces used for Thai weddings and group events.
  • Small Pier & Photo Spots: The jetty and various corners of the resort double as viewpoints and “Instagram” spots in marketing material.
  • Tour Desk & Parking: Standard excursion booking, scooter rental and free parking.

You won’t find a full spa and gym complex here, but for pool-and-sea days it offers plenty.

Beach & Swimming

Because Chai Chet is on a headland, its relationship with the sea is slightly different from resorts planted on a straight line of sand:

  • There’s direct sea frontage, rocky edges and some small sandy coves right in front of the resort.
  • For a long, wide beach walk and classic Klong Prao sand, you stroll a couple of minutes to the main section of the bay.
  • The pool area effectively functions as the main “beach club”, with loungers overlooking the water and sunset.

Most guests split their time between the pool, the nearby stretch of Klong Prao and day trips to other beaches around the island.

Food & Breakfast

Breakfast is a fairly standard buffet: eggs, sausage, toast, rice dishes, fruit and coffee. Feedback is generally “good, not amazing” but notes the decent variety.  The big plus is eating it with a water view.

For other meals you can:

  • Eat at Rabiang Chai Chet for Thai classics and seafood.
  • Walk out to Chai Chet plaza area for additional Thai, Western and Indian options.
  • Hop a songthaew to Klong Prao village or White Sand for more variety.

How Chai Chet Compares to Other Klong Prao Resorts

  • Koh Chang Resort (next door along the bay): Also older, true beachfront on sand with two pools; less dramatic headland setting but more classic “beach in front” feel.
  • Koh Chang Paradise / Klong Prao Resort: Newer and/or better maintained beachfront options further down Klong Prao; more expensive but with nicer rooms.
  • Paradise Hill / Bhu Tarn: Inland with more modern interiors and good pools, but no dramatic sea views; you trade scenery for fresher rooms.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Headland location with excellent views and sunsets
  • Large seafront pool and children’s pool
  • Reasonable prices for a big seafront resort
  • Very easy access to shops and services in Chai Chet
  • Good choice of room categories for different budgets

Cons

  • Rooms and some public areas are clearly ageing
  • Maintenance and housekeeping can be a bit inconsistent
  • Not directly on the best section of Klong Prao sand
  • Spread-out, slightly hilly layout may be tiring for less mobile guests

Who Should Stay at Chai Chet Resort?

Great choice for:

  • Families who want a big pool, sea views and easy supermarket access
  • Couples who value sunsets and scenery over super-modern rooms
  • Travellers looking for a decent-sized resort base at mid-range pricing

Probably not ideal for:

  • Design-hotel fans who care a lot about interior aesthetics
  • People with limited mobility who may struggle with slopes and steps
  • Anyone wanting a quiet, tiny boutique hideaway

Value for Money

Chai Chet Resort offers solid value in 2025 terms: you get a headland location, a big pool, plenty of outdoor space and sea on multiple sides for less than newer beachfront resorts further down Klong Prao. The cost is living with dated décor and the odd cosmetic flaw. If that doesn’t bother you, you’re getting a lot of resort for your baht.

Final Thoughts

Chai Chet Resort is unlikely to impress minimalists or lovers of sleek design, but if your idea of a good holiday is “pool, sea, sunset and somewhere comfortable to crash afterwards”, it absolutely still has a place. Treat it as a solid, old-school seafront resort with a standout setting rather than a glamorous destination hotel, and you’ll probably leave feeling you did pretty well for the price.
