Bailan Beach Resort
Bailan Beach Resort recently added a new hotel block, which changed the type of guests they receive. In the past it was a laid back bungalow resort but the new rooms have more than doubled the number of guests overnight. However, it;s still a relatively peaceful spot and one of the most popular resorts in the area.
It has a small sandy beach and large garden area – ideal for relaxing. Bailan is a hamlet with a few shops and small resorts but none of the nightlife associated with the larger, more well known beach areas to the north. ( However, for a night out, Lonely beach is only a 5 minute taxi ride away.)
The bungalows are mainly set in a tropical garden with a handful of beachfront bungalows occupying prime position. By the beach you’ll find hammocks strung between the palms where you can read or relax and listen to the sound of the ocean. Not ideal for swimming though as there are a lot of stones on the seabed. The new hotel block is at the rear of the property. Rooms are bright and spacious and tastefully furnished. Those on the upper floors have great sunset sea views.
The atmosphere has changed over recent years, but still, it’s a pleasant spot with good value rooms and a laid back seaside location.

In January 2015, I was lucky enough to enjoy a free three-night stay at Bailan Beach Resort, it was a prize in a competition Thai friend entered and they couldn’t go. It’s one of the most popular small resorts in the island, so when i got the opportunity for a free trip I grabbed it.
When I arrived there, I noticed how nice the reception area was. The exterior was grand but the interior was grander. The check-in area was very relaxing. After checking in, I was escorted to my room – Junior Room —as the staff would call it. It could accommodate one to two people. I shared the room with my boyfriend.
Once we got in our room, I started to relax into its gorgeous décor. By the way, if you’re used to having a keycard in some hotels, don’t expect Bailan to offer such. Nevertheless, the room was spacious, even though it was a junior room. It felt way better than a standard hotel room.
Since it wasn’t a luxurious resort I didn’t expect them to provide us with luxury amenities. But all the amenities worked as they should and the room looked brand new. The bed was especially comfy, although i didn’t take to the see through window into the bathroom.
We had lunch in their restaurant, which offered a variety of international and Thai dishes. These were served by friendly staff of the resort. One thing I liked about it is that it’s located a few meters from the beach. And it wasn’t crowded. Our daily breakfast was also rich and tasty.
In terms of Wi-Fi, our room didn’t have a connection which was disappointing as most resorts provide this nowadays. But if you go to the lobby or the check-in counter, you can get a good signal. You just need to ask the receptionist for a password.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, as well. They suggested some tours for us to explore the area. The owner of the resort was extremely nice to us. He was willing to go the extra mile to make our stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. He took the time to give us some recommendations on how to make our stay memorable.
The resort had a nice pool. I loved the fact that I could swim in the pool and relax while looking at the sea. When I turned around, there was a mountain view. Perfect! It was indeed a good way for us to enjoy the scenery.
Unfortunately, since it was near Lonely Beach, I could sometimes hear the music from there at night. They played loud music up to the wee hours. If you come and stay at Bailan Beach Resort, make sure that you book for the farthest room. In this way, you won’t have the same experience as ourselves.
In addition to swimming in the pool or going to the beach, there’s nothing to do here. So, we booked for some tour packages to help us explore the island. We went to some other beaches, which took us 10 – 20 minutes by motorbike.
When you need to explore the island, don’t do it when it’s going to get dark. The reason for this is that the road is very dark and windy. And if you rented a motor bike, it could be tricky and dangerous.
All in all, however, Bailan Beach Resort was a lovely, calm place but possibly too quiet and out of the way for a family with kids who require a better beach and facilities.
