Kai Bae Beach Resort has numerous styles of bungalow in the centre of Kai Bae beach. A very convenient location, with beach restaurants nearby and only a 5 minute walk to shops and restaurants on the main road.

That coupled with a nice beach – good, but not great, right outside and you can’t really go wrong if you are looking for a decent bungalow for a couple of weeks. No pool though, which if you are paying a couple of thousand baht/night you’d probably expect.

A popular resort and one to go for if you don’t find any others that really grab your attention and just want something that ticks the beach/location/AC bungalow boxes.

This Weekend’s Tourist Death Toll

Two definite drownings this past weekend. A couple of others rumoured but not confirmed anywhere yet. But a 43 year old Thai visitor and a 50 year old Dutchman both drowned, with local authorities blaming rip currents for their deaths. There are signs warning of the dangers of rip currents displayed roadside in prominent locations as well as on the beachfront.

But why are there no lifeguards on duty if the authorities know there is a problem?

Good question as in June 2009 a budget of THB 1.15 Million was allocated to the 'Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office' ( which itself is housed in a small shop unit on Pearl Beach) to implement a Precaution and Rescue Potential Development Project specifically for rip tides.

The Precaution and Rescue Potential Development Project offered a beach guard training course for 80 volunteers and placed 5 coastal watchtowers on 3 main beaches.

Lifeguards were stationed on the beaches for a couple of months, between mid June and mid August 2009. They were equipped with a binoculars, a lifebelt, first aid kits and various other brightly coloured pieces of safety equipment. But they haven't been seen again for the past 11 months.

It looks like 1,150,000 Baht doesn't go very far nowadays.
