For 2009

July 15

I was going to post a photo of the weather today, but that is probably too depressing.     Lots of rain yesterday and more today.   What a difference   a week makes. But I did find this photo taken at Koh Kood Resort which nicely sums up the rainy season as a whole despite, the lightning appearing to be Photoshopped.

Rainy season at Koh Kood Resort

A few things that I’ve added these past few days that you may have missed . . .

How does 2,200 baht/night for a brand new 100sqm Pool Villa grab you?   This special Green/Rainy/Low Season deal at Siam Bay Resort lasts until the end of September.   More info and photos here.   Book direct with the resort.

Also cheap deals on rooms on Koh Kood at Away Resort if you book through Evolution Tour on Koh Chang.

Island Tent = 1,000 THB
Deluxe Sea View Bungalow = 1,300 THB
Delux Sea Side Bungalow = 2,400 THB

It’s possible to get between the mainland and Koh Kood every day using the ‘Nim Mong Gorn’ fast boat service from Laem Sok to Ao Salad on Koh Kood. From Leam Sok on the mainland to Ao Salad on Koh Kood.   Departs   Leam Sok Pier at 12.30, arrives Ao   Salad Pier at 14.30.   Return departs from Ao Salad Pier at 10.00 – arrives at Leam Sok Pier at 12.00.

Insightful social commentary or wishful thinking? You decide.

Some photos of art on Koh Mak I didn’t get round to adding until now. One view of   Somchai’s Kingdom of Affection, is that the works mirror his perception about affection in art and individual freedom.   Another would be that Somchai was a bit of an old perv who cracked up after living on a small island for so long. The photos here are the tamer ones, as I’m sure you don’t want to be having to explain   why you’re spending your time at the office staring into the anatomically correct crotch of statue of a naked woman on all fours. “I’m just planning my holiday to Thailand. Honest.” Trust me, your boss has heard that one before.

Almost exciting is the news that Klong Prao Clinic will be extended and upgraded into a real government hospital in the near future.   Last time I went there, over   a year ago, I remembered the ‘nurse’ who dug parts of a rusty nail out of my foot from her previous job at the nearby bakery.   It’ll be fun to see who they get in to staff the new place.

Also added a couple of stories I missed from earlier this year and in 2007 about dolphins being caught in fisherman’s nets around Koh Chang and a 8 metre long whale carcass being washed up on a nearby island.   For some reason these type of stories never make it into the mainstream newspapers or tourist guides.

On White Sand Beach, Sven’s internet cafe which includes the island’s only safety deposit box business is for sale.   Nice little turnkey business to keep you out of trouble if running a beer bar isn’t your thing.   Only 700,000 baht.   Photos & Info

Finally, with still no-one buying anything and no signs of things improving soon, one property developer has sensibly decided to lower prices for their villas to reflect the current economic climate.   The asking prices for these two beautiful, Italian designed homes on Koh Mak   have been reduced by 30%.   Sea views and under 1 minute walk to the beach.   Fully completed and ready to move into.
