Kai Mun a.k.a. Boogie Chicken, White Sand beach

Kai Mun, grilled chicken and somtam restaurant

White Sand beach is a bit of a wasteland when it comes to finding a place for a good, cheap Thai lunch.  There are hotel restaurants and touristy restaurants but very few value for money places where you can guarantee on getting a good meal cooked the way it should be – i.e with a bit of spice and flavour.

One of the two or three saving graces is ‘Kai Mun’ also known as Boogie Chicken – which is a very liberal interpretation of the Thai name which would be more like ‘Chicken Go Around’.  It’s named after what the BBQ chickens do on the spits.  Daft name aside, this restaurant has long been a great place for an inexpensive lunch, with Thai food made the way it should be and presented very nicely on the plate.

If I’m ever unlucky enough to find myself on White Sand beach at lunchtime then I’ll head here to eat.   The restaurant is modern, clean and spacious and staff better than average once you manage to distract them away from their phones.  It’s more expensive, due to the location in White Sand beach, than similar restaurants in quieter areas of the island.  But still way cheaper and tastier than any hotel food and at a much lower price.

The BBQ chickens are a big selling point and they’re best enjoyed with somtam (papaya salad) and sticky rice, although the picture menu has a range of set meals with half a chicken plus a wide range of veggies, salads, choice of potatoes etc.

Excellent fruit shakes are on offer too.  And it’s also good place for doing a spot of people watching.  What more could you want?

They also offer some seafood options in the evening – but I’ve not tried that.

Price: $$ – $$$

Location:  Roadside, near the southern end of White Sand beach, opposite the entrance to Ban Pu Resort.

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited.  I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies.  But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening.  In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine.  If it does, post a comment below.
