For the last official day of the Thai New year celebrations I thought I would focus more on the traditional side of things rather than the water throwing. The use of water cannon during Thai New year has its origins in the practice of politely pouring water over the hands of elders. So it has mutated somewhat from tradition to water gun warfare. However, it is still possible to see some of the traditional aspects of Songkran, no matter where you are in Thailand.
Here on Koh Chang, Klong Prao temple is the focus for most events. This afternoon there was a ceremony where locals came to bless the monks, the old folks danced and everyone played a few ‘old skool’ games. This evening it is the final day of the five night temple fair – the usual combination of games of chance, food, music and market stalls selling the type of stuff you’d never buy if you were sober or not in a festive party mood.
No need to wait another 12 months for more Songkran photos, they will be online in 2 weeks. As Koh Chang celebrates ‘Songkran 2’ on April 28 2012. This is the big party for the islanders and workers.
