If you look at a tourist map of Koh Mak you’ll see that there are two main beaches on the western side of the island, the east seems pretty deserted – that’s because it is.
There are a few small hamlets here occupied by sea gypsies living in ramshackle huts plus a few small, out of the way bungalow resorts but that’s about it.
What this means is that Koh Mak is a much better island to explore by mountain bike (or motorbike) than Koh Chang. It’s small enough so that you can’t get lost but large enough so that you can get off the beaten track and follow narrow tracks through the jungle and rubber plantations.
