Golf on Koh Chang – New 9 Hole Course

golf course

Regular readers of the site will have noticed by now that I rarely get over excited about a new attraction or event here on Koh Chang.   Mainly because most are pretty average at best.   So when one does come along that definitely merits a mention I am happy to spread the word.   So, if are looking for a great way to fill half or full day that combines a bit of gentle exercise with some outdoor fun and then Koh Chang’s latest attraction, which opens in a couple of days, will definitely be worth checking out.

The developers of Siam Royal View housing project have now completed construction of the island’s only golf course of any description.   Of course it isn’t a full links course, but is a more relaxing 9 holes of pitch and putt.   The course is built in the centre of the development and surrounded by water. This not only cools the air but also adds to the challenge as a couple of greens are only accessible by bridge. The signature hole, Hole 3 has the tee and pin on two separate islands linked by a footbridge. One big plus is that if you do shank your drive / pitch then the water in the surrounding lagoon is safe for swimming and also pretty shallow, so you can just jump in and retrieve it – thus saving yourself the 20 baht lost ball fee.

The course has been designed to meet stringent regulations laid down by FIPPA, the governing body for pitch & putt courses worldwide.   What this means in effect is that the course could be used for competitions or even be used as a host course on the Asian Pitch & Putt Tour ( Yes, there is one.)

The picturesque course has also been designed so that in the afternoon it is playable in the reverse direction.   So if you enjoyed the morning’s play you can go round again, in the opposite direction, in the afternoon.   In between you can grab lunch, or have a swim, at the Beach Club, just a couple of minutes walk away.   It is expected to take the average player around 90 minutes to complete the course which will be open year round as it has also been designed to drain quickly, handy as Koh Chang can get damp in the rainy season.

The Course

Chang Noi Nine: Holes 1 – 9, par 27, 507m
Half Moon Nine: Holes 10 – 18, par 27, 523m
All 18 holes : Par 54, 1030m

  • The 9 hole Pitch & Putt is at the Siam Royal View housing development by the beach in Klong Son. From the centre of Klong Son village – the 7-eleven – head towards the ferry pier, go over the first rise and as the road dips down again you will see the turning for Siam Royal View on the left , next to a Yamaha scooter dealer. Head down there and you cant miss it.

( If you stay on the main road you come to the Chinese Shrine on the hill- if you pass that you have gone 50 metres too far, turn around. )

  • This is GREAT news. Koh Chang really could do with a golf course and while this is “only” a pitch and putt, at least it is a step in the right direction. I’m looking forward to giving it a try! (Will probably cost me a fortune replacing all those golf balls though!)

And I gather that it has improved the entrance to Siam Royal View significantly too. Well done SRV!
