The Stage Kai Bae

The Stage is the budget offering from the owners of The Chill, located on the opposite side of the main road.  And, like it’s far more expensive big brother, the Stage is a well-run, nicely designed resort. It’s only small, with 21 bungalows but boasts two pools.  One larger one for laps and a smaller plunge pool for cooling off.

This is a good example of the money you can save by not being beachfront.  You get a stylish, aircon bungalow and pool a few minutes walk from shops, bars and restaurants but with much more privacy than a bungalow on the beach and for half the price.

As it’s owned by The Chill, you might assume that you can wander through The Chill to get to the beach, but you can’t.  So, as the reviewer below also mentions, I’d plan on walking down to the south end of Kai Bae beach where you get a longer, quieter beach to use.

All in all, a recommended place to stay that provides good value for money.  Good choice if being on the beach isn’t a priority.

The Stage hotel is located in the middle of the Kai Bae village. It is by the road but is surrounded by trees and plants. I used to get up at 7 am and used to go for a walk around the hotel and then into the valley in Kai Bae which is very peaceful and a lovely spot for morning exercise.

Let me tell you, I was confused when it came to choosing a hotel. After looking at this hotel, I thought it was a good choice based on it’s value and location.

We chose a Standard cottage because, although we like to stay in good hotels from time to time, all we really need on an island is a friendly place to stay with a pool and clean room. The place was peaceful.

The cottage room we got for ourselves had the most comfortable double bed. The bed was covered in nice and clean smooth bedspreads. The room was fully air-conditioned and had a Wi-Fi connection. The connection at our cottage was so strong that we downloaded a couple of movies and watched them at night, when all we could hear was the whispering of the winds.

The room was cozy and we felt at utmost comfort there. A nice and clean room of a good size and availability of cold and hot water in the bathroom, we could not have asked for more. Shampoo, soaps and toothpaste, it was all there.

The day we arrived to the hotel, we were very tired due to the long trip from Siem Reap. But, thankfully were welcomed so well. I should add that the staff, whether it is the people at the reception, the pool guy or the man doing the gardening every day, all of them had the most generous and welcoming smiles.

I loved spending my time on the beach. We went to the south end of the beach, which although is about 15 minutes walk, we found to be better than the beach nearer the hotel. The best place we found to eat was adjacent to the hotel, a small bistro. I was so confused after looking at the menu, I wanted to order so many things, but I finally settled for the Goat Cheese Tapenade and my husband ordered a Caprese Panini. The food was so good that I almost gulped down the entire thing in 10 minutes. For dessert, we ordered coffee mousse with hazelnut praline and cinnamon biscotti. It was mouthwatering.

If you and your family are planning a vacation on Koh Chang and have a budget of EUR40-50 / night, then The Stage is a wonderful choice.

This place is everything you look for with well-mannered staff, good food, clean and large rooms, clean swimming pools and so much more. You will love the scenery, you will love the location, and above all, you will instantly fall in love with the hotel. If you are a foodie, and love to sleep in spacious neat and well-decorated rooms, then this hotel is for you to explore!
