Bam & Tom, Klong Prao

Bam and Tom Koh Chang

Dec 2015 – Update.  Another restaurant has been rebuilt in the past couple of years but still has the same owners and in the same location.  Still our ‘go to’ place for BBQ chicken

Bam & Boy ( formerly Bam & Tom – but they had a falling out)  is one of many restaurants selling simple Thai food plus BBQ chicken and various types of somtam.  You’ll find this type of restaurant across the island.  Bam & Boy stands out as the owners have made an good effort to provide both a spotlessly clean dining area and, more importantly, this hasn’t led to a compromise when it comes to making the food.  it’s still as spicy as it should be – although they will tone it down if you want.

The sign outside says the somtam is the best on the island – I wouldn’t go that far, but it is very good.  The better places, such as Bam & Boy, will use tamarind to make somtam, those trying to do it quickly or cut corners won’t.  Not all somtams are equal :-).  Likewise, not all BBQ chickens are equal.  Bam & Boy use a very nice glaze that permeates into the meat which adds to the flavour of the meat.

The other Thai dishes we tried were also very good.  No complaints about the food which is also nicely presented on the plate.  The one negative is that they use a two menu system.  Thai diners get a different menu with slightly cheaper prices.  I don’t really approve of this type of thing.

One of the better places for a cheap lunch or dinner in Klong Prao area and also a good first place to try for nervous newbies worried about the cleanliness of smaller roadside restaurants.

Price: $-$$$

Location:  In the centre of Klong Prao village, 100 metres south of the gas station and directly opposite Tesco Express.

These restaurant reviews are just my thoughts on a place at the time I visited.  I’ll mention if I know the owner well or get any freebies.  But for the most of the time I am happy to play tourist and don’t mention this site at all. Obviously it isn’t possible to sample every dish on the menu and the type of food you have for lunch will differ to evening.  In addition, owners and more importantly chefs, can change and your experience may differ from mine.  If it does, post a comment below.
