Alina Resort is located by the beach at the far southern end of White Sand Beach. This 35 room resort is showing it’s age a little but is one of the cheapest beachfront options on White Sand beach. It’s a bit cramped and you wont find any open garden areas but you are only a few metres from the sand.

If you are on a budget and aren’t looking for too many frills or home comforts but just want to be within easy reach of bars and restaurants then it’s worth a look. Fan and Aircon rooms are available

This Weekend’s Tourist Death Toll

Two definite drownings this past weekend. A couple of others rumoured but not confirmed anywhere yet. But a 43 year old Thai visitor and a 50 year old Dutchman both drowned, with local authorities blaming rip currents for their deaths. There are signs warning of the dangers of rip currents displayed roadside in prominent locations as well as on the beachfront.

But why are there no lifeguards on duty if the authorities know there is a problem?

Good question as in June 2009 a budget of THB 1.15 Million was allocated to the 'Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office' ( which itself is housed in a small shop unit on Pearl Beach) to implement a Precaution and Rescue Potential Development Project specifically for rip tides.

The Precaution and Rescue Potential Development Project offered a beach guard training course for 80 volunteers and placed 5 coastal watchtowers on 3 main beaches.

Lifeguards were stationed on the beaches for a couple of months, between mid June and mid August 2009. They were equipped with a binoculars, a lifebelt, first aid kits and various other brightly coloured pieces of safety equipment. But they haven't been seen again for the past 11 months.

It looks like 1,150,000 Baht doesn't go very far nowadays.
