Diving articles

Brain food for anyone considering taking the plunge.

How it all began.  A short history of diving.
From the documented exploits of a Greek sponge diver to the introduction of the Aqualung and the establishing of worldwide standards for dive courses.  Diving has come a long way in the past 2,500 years.

Under pressure.
The laws of physics applied to diving.  If you're one of those people who fell asleep during science class at school, it's time to wake up now.  The effects and practical implications of boring laws discovered hundreds of years ago are vital knowledge every diver should have.

Is Diving Safe?
A question guaranteed to provoke a variety of responses.  Most will agree that it's more dangerous than staying at home and watching 'Jaws' on DVD but less dangerous than riding a motorbike on the crazy streets of Bangkok . . . but how do we define what is safe and what isn't?

Buying Dive Gear.
Should you rush out and buy a state of the art Suunto dive computer at the first thought of taking a dive course?  On second thoughts, do you need a dive computer?  What gear do you need and what to look for if, or when you decide to buy it.

Recognising a good instructor when you meet one.
The guy you meet at the bar has loads of stories to tell and is the life and soul of the party,  but should you trust him with your safety 15 metres underwater?  Here I provide some thoughts on what you should look for in an instructor plus a few factors to consider when choosing your dive school.

Topics covered in the PADI Open Water Diver course.
This is the most popular dive course in the world.  As such, it's interesting and useful to now what it covers.  Here, as the title of the article says, we'll take a quick look at the topics you can expect to learn about during your PADI Open Water course.

The Divemaster course.
Whether you have planned a career in diving or are simply keen on becoming an accomplished diver as quickly as possible the first step on the way to becoming a professional diver is to attain Divemaster certification.
