Koh Ngam, Koh Mai See Yai by sea
kayak
What you'll need . . . a free day, a
vehicle of some kind, quite a few bottles of water and a willingness to
paddle across open water in an area where no-one will hear you scream should
you capsize.
The route

Get in your vehicle - I opted for a 4WD
pick-up but you may prefer a small automatic scooter - 200 baht/day to
rent. Head way down to the end of the road / dirt track in the south
west of the island to Sea Breeze Restaurant which is located opposite Koh
Ngam. This shack in the middle of nowhere has Feelfree sea kayaks to
rent for a very reasonable 250 baht/day. Get in your kayak & paddle.
Simple.
Photos
Starting point. Sea Breeze
restaurant - the food is pretty good. Rent your kayak here.

We headed east, past some new
bungalows. Mam helpfully pointing out that we were approaching a small
island to the east of Koh Ngam

head around the island above and double
back towards Koh Ngam. Off the southern tip of Koh Ngam you'll see this rock

Turn around and you get a rather
nice view view looking into the natural harbour, sheltered from the wind on
both sides. There's a small pier where you could moor a speedboat.
More of this beach later.

And looking towards Koh Mai See Yai
from the same point

Paddle towards Koh Mai See Yai turn
around and looking back to Koh Ngam & Koh Chang

Paddling along the west coast of Koh
Mai See Yai. Koh Bai Dang is the other island visible, in case you are
interested.

The bat cave on the west coast of Koh
Mai See Yai. Only small, cant walk more than 15 metres inside but
quite a few bats in the cave.

We paddled along the south coast in
search of something interesting, ideally a beach, but failing that anything
would do.
No beach but a small sea gypsy stilt
village.

Neat the south-east corner is this old
place with large pier that looks like a restaurant, possibly with
accommodation - but there was no one around when we paddled past.

Heading north up the east coast with
Koh Chang in the distance

Then we headed across the sea back to
Koh Ngam. The south facing beach at Koh Ngam

Cross the sand bar and you're on the
north facing beach

And now just paddle a few hundred
metres back to where you started.
Another good trip of a similar distance
would be to start at the same point and heading west to Koh Laoya then south
to Koh Wai and back to Koh Ngam. More beaches and could also have
lunch on Koh Wai.
