These are bits and pieces that don't fall
into any category. Usually they are things that I've written that ended up
being too lengthy or longwinded to include in the all encompassing A-Z
Take a look, there should be something for
everyone. One may be crap - in your humble opinion - but another may well
raise a smile or, more unlikely, trigger some deep thought provoking
activity in your subconscious mind. You never know.
Koh Chang in 'The Times' - Rave reviews of
the island from a Times newspaper journalist who's job it is to write rave
reviews of places he visits for free. Nice work if you can get it.
Koh Chang in 'The Independent' - Yet more
praise, this time from a journalist who hasn't actually been here but heard it's
nice enough.
Koh
Chang in 'The Observer'. Completing a 'holy trinity' of British
broadsheets, the Observer got round to sending a journo on a junket to KC
in Jan '06, in this thinly disguised advertorial for Kuoni & Amari.
Although the content is much more than the usual tourist brochure
nonsense.
Thai Girl
- The best selling English language novel in Thailand is partly set on Koh
Chang, take a look for more details an excerpt or two. Well worth picking
up as poolside reading whilst on KC.
Salakkok
Mangrove Walkway - Koh Chang's newest (late 2005) sad attempt at an
eco-friendly attraction. 800 metres of concrete through protected
mangroves.
Saving Bambi - The day I pulled a baby deer
out of the sea. . . aahhh. (I love deer, but I couldn't eat a whole one.)
It's all in the
name - How did Koh Chang get it's name. Local folklore in the form of
'Petch' the elephant and her run in with a 'Buddhist saint' in ye olden days.
DIY Beach Hut - A
quick step by step guide to building your own beach hut.
Hotel Brochures - Taking the piss out of
some of the brochures from posh hotels. If they're charging 5,000
baht/night they should be prepared to splash out 500 baht to get the English in
their brochure checked . . . . most don't.
Lonely Beach Blues
- September 2005, last year the island was the busiest it's ever been . . . so
why are so many small businesses for sale in Lonely Beach?
Scuba Diving - A quick round up of the dive
sites around the island.
The Masterplan -
It's glossy . . . it's got a foreword from
the P.M. himself . . . it can only be the government's masterplan for
Koh Chang . . . and it's only got slightly less substance than a
Victoria sponge cake.
Battle of KC - Info for any naval
historians who have stumbled upon this site my mistake. France vs. Thailand
in WW2. You can probably guess who won and who's navy was wiped out.
KC Development - A look at building sites
around the island
Helping Hands - Sometimes mother nature
needs a helping hand in order for her natural beauty to be revealed. a few
examples of some of the remodeling that has been done island wide.
Go East - A few of the
south-east coast
highlights. Getting down there is a hassle, but it's worth it.
Roadside
Resorts - Fed up of spending hours searching for a room by the beach in your
budget? Have a partner who's playing up and demanding you find somewhere they
can go to the toilet or take a shower right now? The a roadside resort
could be for you.
Temple Fair - Written in half an hour after
coming back from the Klong Prao Temple's Loy Krathong Festival. Published
in January 2005 'Farang' magazine.
Six of the Best - A few of the
nicer places to stay with choices made according to budget, location etc.
(Needs updating though as it was written in mid 2004.)
Crap Signs - Photo journalism at it's best.
A few signs found on Koh Chang that will leave you thinking.
Queen's
Cup. A charity event for pachyderms, so it's
hard to knock the cause. Indeed the cause is a noble one, give me an
elephant over a starving Sudanese child any day. That said,
two of these annual events have now been held and neither of them has been
able to whip up any interest whatsoever from 99.9% of tourists. Why?
A guide to a guide. A peek inside a recent
edition of every visitors favourite print guide, the snappily entitled '
Koh Chang, Trat & the eastern islands' guide.
Storm
in a teacup. Bored farangs get together to bitch about an
article I wrote about rainy season activities for 'Pattaya & Beyong'
magazine. The article had me branded by three business owners on Koh
Chang as the anti-christ. A Pattaya based agent of destruction sent
to bring down tourism on the island. What do you reckon?
