. . . make the most of your
holiday.
We used to have our own speedboat that
we rented out to groups and families but we kept upsetting whichever sea god
is responsible for the smooth running of 2-stroke outboards and so we
eventually got bored of fixing the engine. We might get a new
smaller boat in late 2007 but only for personal use. Therefore, we now
use speedboats from Kai Bae Hut, Koh Chang who have been running trips for
over 15 years and employ safe, experienced captains. They have several
boats of differing sizes and can cater for groups of 4 or less right up to a
party of 25 people

Trip ideas around Koh Chang |
Boat trip destinations - know
where you are going
1. Inshore islands. If you don't want to spend a whole day out at sea
or have young children then the groups of six small islands just off Klong
Prao & Kai Bae beaches is a good option. This trip is more to enjoy
the panoramic views of the beaches set against the mountains of Koh
Chang, rather than for seeing lots of fish. This trip is usually done as a
half day trip rather than a full day. However, anyone reasonably fit
can canoe around the islands instead - which is much cheaper and more fun
and
2. Koh Wai. A popular
stop, usually in the afternoon on the way back from the main snorkelling
sites to the south. Here you can snorkel on the coral reef just
off the beach or choose to laze on the sand.
3. Koh Rang. If you simply
want to see as many fish as possible, the small islands off Koh Rang are the
place to go. Most boat tours visit more or less the same small islands
- so they can get busy in high season if tour boats all decide to visit the
same islands at the same time (one reason to have the flexibility of renting
a boat privately) . You'll visit a few small islands where
you're guaranteed to have clear water & a wide variety of fish.

Leaving Koh Wai & Koh Mak behind |
4. Koh Mak. An
increasingly popular island, around 16sqm kilometres in size. In mid
2007 several mountainbike routes were laid out which allow visitors to
explore the island and see places of interest both scenic and related to the
history of Koh Mak easily. Or you could just spend a day lazing on the
beach here - but take time to walk up to Koh Mak Villa and see the amazing
views of Koh Chang, and other islands to the north.

The highlighted tours are the most popular.
Tour 1 is the best for snorkelling, you will
visit all the best snorkelling sites during the day.
Tour 4 is better if you want to spend more time
on Koh Wai, which is a nice island with snorkelling off the beach. Very
good for small children as they can feed the fish whilst standing in the
shallow water. Koh Klum isn't as popular a snorkelling spot as other islands and Koh Laoya is a
very pretty private island with one resort and so most boat trips don't go
there.
Tour 5 is a good way to have a day out on on
Koh Mak - which is a very nice island to explore by mountainbike or you
could just to spend time on a long deserted beach. Koh Kham is a very
small island nearby with black volcanic rocks that contrast with the white
sand at low tide. Very picturesque.
Tours 2 & 3 are to the islands just off Klong
Prao beach - the snorkelling conditions aren't as good as the islands to the
south.
Tours 6 & 7 will be interesting but more for
sightseeing than snorkelling as they will will involve a long time on the
speedboat, which can be uncomfortable if the sea is choppy.
