A few months after adding the Koh Chang
hotels page to the site it occurred to me that pretty much everyone visiting
Koh Chang is coming via Bangkok. (It took me a bit if time to figure
that out . . . I'm not a marketing genius as you can see)
Also, the type of people who
visit this site and email me are making their own travel arrangements and often email
me to ask for places to stay in Bangkok, 'The Venice of the East' a.k.a.
'The City of Angels' a.k.a. 'A large, polluted, congested, concrete assault
on your senses'.
I lived in Bangkok for 6 years so know
the majority of the hotels that are mentioned on the online booking sites
and can picture the location and
whether or not it's suitable for the type of place that a particular person
might be looking for.
However, it isn't hard for me to see how much hassle finding a
place to stay could be. The reason being is that, simply, there are a hell of a
lot of possibilities to choose from.
Therefore, rather than adding just a
lengthy list of places & prices, I've narrowed the options down and given my
not particularly humble opinion as to who the hotel might be suited to and why
it's worth staying in and the area of Bangkok it's located.
The hotels are a mix of places.
There are the budget options. If you're just in Bangkok for a couple
of days and don't require an ensuite jacuzzi, then a clean, comfortable,
room in a convenient location is all you need. There are also a few of
the popular 3 star hotels which offer good value - I've chosen ones in
locations that are good for shopping or just for getting around
Bangkok easily. A couple of the more unique and luxurious options are also
included, as I know that not everyone has a budget of under US$70 a night
and if you're travelling half way around the world then you might as well
indulge yourself.
An often ignored option are
serviced apartments. These are the places that wealthy expats live in,
but they also rent out rooms on a daily basis. With well designed,
practically furnished rooms usually at least double the size of your average
hotel room, kitchen & dining areas, plus 4 star facilities in great city
centre locations they're well worth
considering. Another benefit of these places is the lack of touts
hanging around outside, they all congregate where the obvious tourists stay.
(If you're planning on staying in town for more than a few days then I'd
choose a serviced apartment over a hotel.)
In addition there's one new take on the
homestay idea - a homestay apartment, for those of you who'd prefer to steer
clear of too many tourists but still stay in comfort.
